A$AP ROCKY FILM DEBUT, ‘DOPE’, A HIT AT THIS YEARS SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL.
As a fellow Harlem World born and bred New Yorker, I love to see people from my neighborhood succeed. Harlem hip-hop artist A$AP Rocky made his big screen debut in the Rick Famuyiwa film ‘Dope’; And his performance is receiving positive reviews.
Billed as a coming of age comedy/drama for the post hip hop generation, ‘Dope’ has been getting a lot of well deserved attention at the recent Sundance Film Festival. A bidding war for the film ensued between the Weinstein Company and Open Road Films (along with Sony Pictures), with the latter winning the rights to the film for $7 million. ‘Dope’ is about a book smart teen enduring the effects of the hood while aspiring to attend Harvard University. Finally we have a film that brings back the feeling of watching‘Boyz in da hood’ and ‘Juice’, which are the staple for hood portrayal movies. The success of this film may propel A$AP into a category of recording artist to Hollywood crossover, but don’t be so sure that A$AP will get soft because his latest track “Get Paid” featuring Ty Beats is climbing up the charts. All we can say is go A$AP go.
