LIL WAYNE SUING / LEAVING CASH MONEY AND PLANS TO TAKE HIS YOUNG MONEY CREW WITH HIM
According to TMZ, Lil Wayne says he’ll be taking Drake, Nicki Minaj, and his whole Young Money stable away from Cash Money.
Technically Wayne is the CEO of Young Money, so their contracts belong to him; However, all the Young Money artists contracts are tied to distribution deals with Cash Money. Now why is this case important in the music industry might you ask? The outcome of this case will be used as a cornerstone for future cases involving contacts versus distribution deals. Imagine if you signed to a friends label and then signed a distribution deal for your artists. Once that relationship goes sour well how will it affect future single and album releases? The only people who really suffer are the fans because long drawn out court battles can hinder the distribution of new music (except for the occasional mixtape). In the end some people wouldn’t be suprised if Birdman DOES settle out of court with Lil Wayne because no CEO likes a disgruntled artist especially one who is industry savy and may have some dirt on them. I know Nicki and Drake fans could care less about the YME vs CMR battle, but they should start caring because we may not hear any new material from them in a while.
